About Isla Gorgona National Natural Park

Located off the Pacific coast of Colombia, Isla Gorgona National Natural Park encompasses the entire island of Gorgona and its surrounding waters. The island rises steeply from the ocean, with terrain dominated by dense tropical rainforest, steep cliffs, and volcanic formations. The park protects a unique ecosystem that supports endangered species such as the green sea turtle, the pygmy marmoset, and several species of birds and marine life. Historically, Isla Gorgona was used as a penal colony until 1984, and remnants of prison structures remain as part of the park's cultural heritage. Since becoming a national natural park, efforts have focused on conservation and sustainable tourism to preserve its biodiversity. Visitors can explore jungle trails that pass through vibrant tropical flora and fauna, snorkel or dive in the adjacent coral reefs, and participate in guided whale watching during migration seasons. Notable landmarks include the prison ruins, Playa Blanca—a white sand beach ideal for relaxation—and several scenic overlooks providing panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. The island’s remote location and strict visitor regulations provide a sense of seclusion and pristine wilderness, making it a sought-after destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure travelers seeking a combination of cultural history and rich biodiversity.
